From October 24 to 25, the ancient monastery of Chan sect and the Kungfu shrine--China Songshan Shaolin Temple’s Black Vs White Go Tournament surfaced again. The “2019 Black Vs White Go Tournament” opened grandly, guided by Chinese Weiqi Association, hosted by China Songshan Shaolin Temple, co-hosted by Henan Provincial Weiqi Association and Shaolin Weiqi Institute. This is also the 3rd Black Vs White amateur Go competition hosted by Shaolin Temple. During the 2-day event, eight folk masters, selected from among tens of thousands of go masters, fought in Songshan Mountains. The champion go player would challenged the national go player and world champion Jiang Weijie at the Abbot Hall of Shaolin Temple. To inherit the Shaolin Tradition of playing go and carry forward Chinese go culture, during the competition, Shaolin Temple’s Sutra-Keeping Pavilion, united with Shaolin Weiqi Institution, hosted exhibition of ancient books and utensils. A group of precious Weiqi utensils and an only existing chess manual started with the populace to meet. In addition, the “2019 Shaolin Black Vs White Go Tournament ? Go Culture Summit Forum” were also held in Shaolin Temple. Experts, scholars and famous national go players gathered to discuss Buddhism and go culture jointly.







        On the morning of Oct. 24, at 9:30am, the “Black Vs White Go Tournament” grandly opened in Shaolin Temple. Abbot Yongxin attended the opening ceremony and presided over the prayer assembly. President of Chinese Weiqi Association, honorary president of Chinese Weiqi Association Wang Runan, Henan Provincial Committee of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference Li Yingjie, former party secretary of Henan Federation of Literary and Art Circles Wu Changzhong as well as famous national go player Liu Xiaoguang, Liu Xianhe and other leaders and guests attended the ceremony. The event was presided over by Wang Yi, vice president and secretary-general of Chinese Weiqi Association.








        At the opening ceremony, Abbot Yongxin introduced that hosting the “Black Vs White Go Tournament” is Shaolin Temple’s efforts and attempt to carry forward the Chinese treasure. The event has functions to break down the barrier, build platforms, inspire wisdom, etc. The competition breaks through channels of government and non-government, amateurs and professionals, sports and culture as well as promotes communications across community borders, ages, professions, and even ideologies. 

        Through the ages, Weiqi has many links with Buddhism. A number of eminent monks had a deep bond with Weiqi, mading it as a practice. According to historical documents, Chan Master Yixing of Shaolin Temple in Tang Dynasty and Chan Master Qiuhang in Qing Dynasty were both famous Weiqi master at that time. Shaolin Temple restores Weiqi culture, continuing doing so, which has a supreme meaning and can boost the inheritance and development of the Chinese Weiqi culture.






        President of Chinese Weiqi Association Lin Jianchao appraised Shaolin Temple’s Weiqi competition was the top folk meeting for Weiqi. Weiqi closely, naturally combines with Buddhism and Chan, booming in China and having profound social foundations. Shaolin Temple, as one of the most famous temples in the world, makes outstanding contributions to it, doing lots of good deeds and charity for the development of Weiqi. Shaolin Temple hosted the Black Vs White Go Tournament, gathering enthusiasts from around China and even all over the world actively to attend the event meanwhile first set up the Shaolin Weiqi Institute to carry forward Weiqi culture and make a unique contribution to the mining and research on Weiqi culture.

        As former president of Chinese Weiqi Association Wang Runan announced the “2019 Shaolin Black Vs White Go Tournament” opened, 8 folk go masters from around the country officially started fighting at the Meditation Hall in Shaolin Temple. 8 players battling for the title fought their way from tens thousands of players through the internet preliminaries. The youngest one of the final eight players is only 15-year-old.




        During the first “Black Vs White Go Tournament”, Meng Fanxiong winning the championship challenged national champion Guli, winning a narrow victory at the Abbot Hall. During the second go competition, champion Tao Hanwen challenged national champion Chang Hao. Finally, Chang Hao won out.

        After a whole day’s fighting, Tao Hanwen held the No. 1 sport and challenged the world champion Jiang Weijie at the Abbot Hall of Shaolin Temple on Oct. 25.

        On the morning of October 25, the 2019 Shaolin Black Vs White Go final challenge was held at the Abbot Hall. Over 2 hours fighting, the champion of the 2019 Black Vs White Go Tournament Jiang Weijie lost to the national champion Jiang Weijie. After the game, Tao Hanwen expressed that Jiang Wijie is worthy of the name “national top go player”, having a supreme meaning meanwhile his sills in Weiqi also obtains the inspiration from it.

        At the award ceremony, Liu Xiaoguang was appointed to head coach of the Shaolin Weiqi Institute”. Abbot of China Songshan Shaolin Temple Shi Yongxin, honorary president of the Chinese Weiqi Association Wang Runan, national champion Liu Xiaoguang and so on successively awarded trophies and certificates to the final eight.





        In addition, on the morning of Oct 24, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the PRC, Shaolin Weiqi Institute united with the Sutra-Keeping Pavilion of Shaolin Temple hosted the exhibition of Weiqi utensils and ancient books. All Weiqi ancient books and utensils on display this time covered Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing and other dynasties. It could be called the largest exhibition of Weiqi utensils and ancient books in the Chinese Buddhist circles.









        On the afternoon of Oct. 24, the “2019 Shaolin Black Vs White Go Tournament ? Go Culture Summit Forum” were successfully held at the Shaolin State of Joy in Shaolin Temple. President of the Chinese Weiqi Association Lin Jianchao, honorary president of the Chinese Weiqi Association Wang Runan and dean of the Shaolin Weiqi Institute Master Yanyong, world-famous national champion Liu Xiaoguang and others gathered to discuss Weiqi and Buddhist history, the development direction of Chinese go, etc. The forum was presided over by CCTV’ s host Huang Zizhong.

        “Confucianism maintains active attitude toward society, Taoism is freely recluse in the world, and Buddhism is detached. In fact, they are the same as the states of Weiqi.” President Lin Jianchao thinks that Weiqi and Chinese Buddhist culture are inseparable and complement each other. As the ancient monastery of Chan sect, it is hoped that Shaolin Temple could continue holding the Black Vs White Go Tournament, which is benefit to carry forward the Chinese Weiqi culture.
